The philosophy of the more you work the more results you will attain is pure hogwash. The people who get the most amount of efficient work done don't work as hard as we perceive them to. So how to get great quality results with minimum effort? In today's topic, I'll be elucidating one of the great principles mentioned in the book HOW TO BE A STRAIGHT-A STUDENT by Cal Newport.
Cal Newport, during his freshman year in Dartmouth College, worked excruciatingly hard but wasn't able to see the results he desired. The following years, he went on a hunt for the discovery on the secret to what keeps the top students at the top of the their competition. What he discovered was that the best students weren't necessarily the ones who worked the hardest. And this seemed pretty fascinating to him! He ended up interviewing some of those top students who weren't ''grinders'' from elite universities around the country and finally found the answer.
So this is a simple equation that exhibits the amount of work produced by a person :
Work produced = Time x Intensity
This means that the time you spend doesn't solely matter the most when it comes to producing efficient work. What matters is how much quality time you spend with intensity for the work that truly matters. If a person spends 10 hours a day with a level 3 of intensity the amount of work he/she will produce will be 30. On the other hand, the individual who works a three hours a day with a level 10 intensity, the amount of work he/she will produce will also be 30. Now that's what you call the difference between hard-work and smart-work!
Now you would be wondering that time is still the most important factor because if you work 10 hours a day with a level 10 of intensity, your'e going to produce an enormous amount of work. But that is just impractical. Our psyche does not work in such a manner. The more time you spend working the lesser the intensity you will work with.
What are some ways you can increase the level of intensity when you are working?
1. Divide your work into small pieces :
The maximum amount of time you must spend working in one go should be somewhere from 30 to 60 mins in order to gain high level of focused intensity. Also make sure you breakdown your work time onto different time slots of the day so that your brain gets enough time to refuel energy .
2.Setting up an environment that promotes focus:
This idea is a really crucial yet most people deny it. For having great focus you need to cut-off all distractions for the time you work. After you complete your work use those distractions as a reward to yourself for being productive.
That's a wrap for today's discussion! Hope y'all got a basic idea about achieving optimal results with the slightest effort. See y'all next time๐๐
